There is lot more than academics in your B school journey

“Welcome to Trichy International airport”- this announcement from flight attendant elated me since in a few moments, I was supposed to enter into a place that would shape my next two years. There is always a certain unspoken charm of being a student at an IIM; apparently, that tag provides a launchpad for people to pursue their dreams and set new goals for themselves.

As soon as I started my journey, I got to interact with best in class faculty and students with great acumen, that made the learning experience exciting. The pedagogy which is followed in premium B schools makes you an avid thinker, problem solver, and confident enough to deal with any business problem. But life at any premium B school does not end at academics only.

Three terms passed in a jiffy and it is still hard to believe that I have spent nine months at this place.  Although I was here to read and learn more things but now when I look back, all I can remember is the other activities that kept us relaxed and motivated throughout the year. Be it sectional cultural war, be it sectional sports tournament, be it Annual fest or any other festive celebration or any sort of late-night party in hostel rooms, all these activities keep you alive and motivated to attend the next day’s class that starts at 8:30.

I would say that yes, we need to read a lot to learn and succeed in life, but all these other activities will make your life memorable on campus. You will forget what had happened in the lecture which you had attended 15 days back, but you will always remember how much you had enjoyed, danced and sang with your friends on a special day. I am part of the cultural committee and when any event is organized and when I enjoy that event with everybody else, it just rejuvenates me and hopefully charges everybody with a new wave of energy.

There are a lot of opportunities available for you to do what you like in addition to academics. The best way to do that is to join a club/committee of your interest and when people with the same interests collaborate, they create something magical and it happens always. You like painting? Join some art groups and see how easily you will create a masterpiece. You like to hit sixes out of the park? Play regularly with your friends and see how easily you become the best batsman in your B school.

It’s not that you need not study and just enjoy your life there, but when you do something you like in addition to academics, it boosts up your energy and motivation to do better in the next lecture.

My advice to everyone who is about to join any B school would be – “Do what you like in addition to academics and make these two years the crème de la crème of your life.”
