About the Author:
Akshay Singh (Solutions head of technology and innovation at White Rivers Media. )

MA: How did this journey begin? Were you always inclined towards Product Management?
Akshay: I started my career in software sales I used to sell, troubleshoot, and fix software issue’s for the USA, UK, and Australian clients. This stint gave me very useful experience in client servicing. When I shifted to hardcore development I realized clients are very comfortable talking to me and giving me briefs which made me jump to product management after 4 years as a developer.
MA: From choosing the subjects in college to now working in the field, how does this transition feel?
Akshay: The transition has been very interesting for me in my first job I realized that level of knowledge I have is not sufficient to survive in this industry, but luckily I have always been blessed with some amazing mentors who were always there to answer my questions and to share their experience with me.
MA: Can you tell us about your job role?
Akshay: As the head of technology and innovation, my major time goes into research and to make sure that we are aware of all new technological advancements happening in the marketing industry. I have created a couple of products which have been very successfully deployed in Bollywood which helps production houses to target their ads to more relevant audiences
MA: What do you think are the qualities that are needed for someone who wants to excel in this field?
Akshay: Patience and Good Listening skills are the two most important qualities required to succeed. You need to be patient with your team to understand where they come from. Have regular communication with the team to understand their skill set, what work excites them, and what does not. Any manager who has this understanding can successfully break down any project into smaller Scope of work and can get it done by his team.
MA: What skills should these people develop to grab their dream roles/jobs?
Akshay: Good communication skills are very important to grow in any field. A manager should have a good understanding of the technology stack used in the development of products so that he can explain them to client or users in a way which they can understand.
MA: What message would you like to give to the Product Management enthusiast?
Akshay: Work on your communication skill and people management skills. Each member of the team will have different personalities and to make sure everyone gives his best on the project you need to understand their personalities. Also, have a good understanding of technical concepts so that you can understand the efforts required to make a product.
