Experience helps you grow immensely

About the Author:

Gaurav Poswal (Senior Product Manager at GiantView Private Limited, MBA IIM Visakhapatnam)

MA: How did this journey begin? Were you always inclined towards Product Management?

Gaurav: My journey in Product Management began with my first job after MBA. I worked as a Product Manager on a new HyperLocal Marketplace platform. Working on a product that was in the nascent stage gave me ample opportunities to think and implement new features. I explored many fields during my MBA via internships, live projects, and case competitions. It was during my MBA that I got to know in-depth about product management role seniors and my peers and I realized my interest.

MA: From choosing the subjects in college to now working in the field, how does this transition feel?

Gaurav: This transition is somehow surreal and very enriching. During college, we learned the theory as well as we tried to understand the field with help of past cases and other's experience. But when we are working on a product the experience of creating a feature out of an idea and then watching people using that feature, getting feedback for the feature, this experience is very satisfying.

MA: Can you tell us about your job role?

Gaurav: Currently, I am working on top influencers.in which is an influencer marketing platform. I am working as a senior product manager on this product. I take care of product roadmap planning and execution, operation, and sales for the platform.

MA: What do you think are the qualities that are needed for someone who wants to excel in this field?
Gaurav: According to me, few skills needed to succeed in Product Management are 1. Logical thinking 2. Data-driven approach 3. User Empathy 4. Cross-functional communication

MA: What skills should these people develop to grab their dream roles/jobs?

Gaurav: Apart from the skills mentioned above, one should focus on the following things 1. Data Analytics 2. Database concept 3. UX/UI Design knowledge 4. Project Management 5. Communication and Analytical Skills (Most Important)

MA: What message would you like to give to the Product Management enthusiast?

Gaurav: Product Management is a field where experience helps you grow immensely. So I would suggest students work on capstone projects, product internships and keep looking for new trends and in the field. Another important thing is to keep yourself updated with new products and trends in the industry of your interest.
