Into the world of Marketing and Branding

MA: How did this journey begin? Were you always inclined towards marketing?

Sanchit Mittal: When I was a kid, there was a jingle that got stuck in my mind. It is not what you are thinking, it was the famous advertisement “Washing Powder Nirma. Doodh si Safedi, Nirma se aayi…” and I used to think, Why is it so famous & catchy? How was it made? Will I ever be able to create something like this? These 3 questions stayed with me throughout my journey and this led me to where I am today.

MA: From choosing the subjects in college to now working in the field, how does this transition feel?

Sanchit Mittal: Both of these tasks were completed with equal dedication in their respective time frame. The only transition that happened is, one of them had an impact only on me while the other one empowers the society. Had it been the case, the first impact was not up to the mark, the second impact would never have happened.

MA: Can you tell us about your job role?

Sanchit Mittal: Currently I am the Assistant Brand Manager for Skin Care Category, Emami Ltd. I am responsible for devising brand strategy, delivering topline & bottom-line targets for the brands by setting up business growth plans, generating consumer insights through various research tools, development of 360° brand communication, driving NPD funnel, making GTM strategies, and working in close liaison with all stakeholders to drive business & build strong customer relationships.

MA: What do you think are the qualities that are needed for someone who wants to excel on this
field?

Sanchit Mittal: Some typical personality traits and qualities that are associated with brand managers are creative/innovative thinking, strong analytical skills, strong communication skills, strong decision making, patience and aggression at the same time, and multitasking. Most consumer marketing companies push you to start with sales in order to have an idea of on-ground reality and I personally think, it is important.

MA: What skills should these people develop to grab their dream roles/jobs?

Sanchit Mittal: Try to develop yourself as a brand. Your responsibilities do not end with grasping all the concepts, but you have to create a complete personality to resonate with the desired company. You are not going to be just an employee to the firm but its ambassadors. You will be the one representing the company in the market.

MA: What message would you like to give to the Marketing enthusiast? (What they should do
during their college time, what are new trends that they should be looking out for)

Sanchit Mittal: I want to address this question by giving the suggestion to all the readers that they should not wait for any course to come up in their curriculum or prof. to teach. They should take the first step as early as possible and anyone can do that by simply ‘Not clicking on the skip button on YouTube’.
